We took a short trip to Surfside Beach this weekend…
Here is some sample footage from my new camera. I didn’t use a tripod so it’s a little shaky…Oh Mojitos, how I miss you already! Hope you enjoy it.
I can only climb so much...

So I went to BANFF the other night and it just wasn’t the same. Being accustomed to Boone ways, it was quite a let down. I’m used to going to a packed house at farthing auditorium with a good vibe that is hard to deny. As you can see by the picture, it was just a tad bit different. Oh well. The videos were pretty good. My favorite was the mountain biking in BC with the crazy ass jumping and whatnot. I was hoping to see some fresh amateur climbing videos but they showed was Alex Honnold solo Moonlight Buttress and Half Dome instead. Soloing is badass but it made me anxious just watching that shit! I just got back from the beach and I’ve got some cool footage to post from my new camera. Come back soon to check it out!
COMING TO COLUMBIA, SC!!! That’s right. Get your tickets here! It’s April 27 @ 8:00pm which is on a Tuesday (lame). It’s going to be an intimate show in a very small venue. It should be a lot of fun. I’m excited that Columbia is getting a pretty big band and hopefully Columbia’s music scene will flourish once again (remember Hootie and the Blowfish!). I was stoked when I heard they were coming to town so I thought I would share the news with you.
So I went down to Atlanta with Cade to check out Spoon at the tabernacle. It took us roughly 3 hours to get to Atlanta from Columbia. This show was my first experience at the Tabernacle. The building is quite amazing and the acoustics were killer. I highly recommend this venue for any concert! It was my 3rd time seeing Spoon live and the show was stellar. Their live effects on vocals, guitars, and keyboards are pretty amazing. We were right next to the mixing board and the light guy which was pretty cool to watch. I took some pretty shitty pictures with my phone just to give you an idea of what it looked like inside. We were going to hit up the FATS trails on the way back in Augusta but it was rainy today. It probably worked out for the better considering we were both a little hungover from the show. Hope yall are doing good.
My buddy Ryan has a sweet ass steel band called J’Ouvert Steel Band (check em out here). He asked me to man the sound equipment for him because his girlfriend is swamped this week. I don’t really have a clue what I’m doing but he gave me a quick lesson so I felt ready to go into battle. He had a gig at this sweet hunting club in Columbia, SC. It’s right next to this swamp which was pretty sweet. The gig was for a retirement party for this dude that worked for the forest service or something. When they finally got done talking about redneck stories (I enjoyed most of them, I can’t lie), the band was able to setup shop and play for a few hours. I didn’t have any issues with feedback or anything like that. Ryan’s setup is pretty nice and has some really cool features that I didn’t even knew existed. It’s funny because I have this (false) pride when I stand behind the mixer. I’m officially a badass roadie now. I swilled a few units and tried to blend in as best I could. I had fun and it was great learning a little about mixers and whatnot. You should really check out their music. It’s carribean music with a certain freshness to it. They even do covers of “Just Beat It”,“Stand By Me” and Bob Marley stuff. I’m going to help them out again tonight at a bar called “The Loose Cockaboose”. Should be even more fun. Saturday I’m heading down to ATL to see SPOON. Oh yea.
I headed up to Boone this past weekend to see some friends and hang out. I brought my climbing gear and my bike just in case the weather turned for the better. It didn’t
When I got into town I couldn’t believe all of the destruction this great winter has caused. The ice storms have really taken a toll on the hardwoods of the high country. Every time I turned the corner there were trees split in half. The top of the canopy looked like broken toothpicks and the forest floor was covered in leftover debris. It will be interesting to see what spring looks like…
I enjoyed watching some of the ACC tournament this weekend. Watching some college basketball has got me pretty excited for March Madness coming up. They just announced all of the teams and you can check out the bracket here. I’m not a huge college basketball fan but it’s fun to watch the top college squads battle it out for the love of the game.
I was hoping to see NC State pull it off but they just couldn’t seem to do it…

Saturday I got together with some Boonies and we decided to hit up the Boone Bowling Center (the only bowling alley I know of w/o alcohol!) . There was some pretty hefty betting going on and the competition was fierce. We bowled 5 or 6 games Saturday afternoon but we still didn’t get enough. After a couple hours of rest, we went back for more. Cosmic bowling! With DJ Wolf still holding down the fort, we were listening to Mambo #5, Scatman, and other incredibly cheesy songs. After another 5 games or so, we realized our arms were ripped out of socket and our fingers were barely able to hold on to the ball. Needless to say, my game went downhill with the quickness. I woke up this morning and I am ashamed to admit I’m sore as hell, from bowling. I honestly feel like I went rock climbing all weekend without a bit of rest. I have much respect for the PBA (professional bowling association) hard asses. ——————————————————————————-
All in all, I had a nice weekend in Boone seeing some good friends and catching up on the good ol’ days. Next time I come up I’ll be sure to pick a weekend where I can climb and maybe go mountain biking. I’m thrilled we had to set our clocks forward today. Long days await as we inch closer to spring. I can hear hawksbill calling my name!
Ok Go – This Too Shall Pass
Check out this video by OK Go, Rube Goldberg style. The song is good but the video is even cooler. Quite creative if I must say so myself! I gotta give Jesse props for telling me about this video. I thought this was very entertaining for a single shot.
Anyways, I went biking again today and the weather couldn’t have been any better. A balmy 71 degrees in Cola. Ah, the sunshine feels so good! The rest of the week looks like rain so I’ll be back on the elliptical machine…FML. Gotta get it while the gettin’s good!
Off to Taco Tuesday at the whig. Hate to say it but it blows Boone Saloon out of the water on taco night! 50 cent tacos and a “real” laid back vibe.
So I just got off the phone with Erich (http://erichpurpur.blogspot.com) and we were chatting about blogs. I informed him that my life is rather boring in Columbia compared to Lake Tahoe. I mean really, he is living the life out in Tahoe and currently driving to Utah to sample some of the best powder in the country. That bastard!
I went biking after work this evening and it was pretty sweet. I went to Sesqui today which is a 6.1 mile loop. Although it’s pretty sandy, it’s 5 minutes from work and a pretty decent workout. There are some fun sections in the trails winding through the trees and jumping a couple roots. I’m pretty psyched on mountain biking. I love my new bike every time I ride it. I’m looking forward to going up to Dark Mountain outside of Wilkesboro sometime.
On a side note, it’s days like today where I enjoy living in the armpit of the south. It was 70 degrees with bright blue skies down here. Although it gets super hot and humid in the summer, I’m sure as hell enjoying it right now. The weather is perfect this time of year! I better enjoy it while I can because pretty soon I’ll be escaping to the blue ridge as much as possible…
