Blanket Creek Mountain Bike Trails

Blanket Creek

While I was in Atlanta I went mountain biking at Blanket Creek in Northwest Atlanta.  These were by far some of the baddest trails I’ve ever been on.  I picked the two advanced trails which were called the Van Michael and the South Loop.  Both were right around 4 miles long.  The Van Michael stood out as the coolest trail.  There were some pretty gnarly climbs and quick descents.  The trail was smooth and very well groomed.  There were also some technical sections with steep embankments that kept you on your toes.  I wish I had pictures of the actual trails but I didn’t feel like stuffing my camera in my pack.  I highly recommend this trail system if you’re around ATL.

Within the last week…

Bell's Pale Ale

Finally back to the home base for a brief stint.  This past week consisted of some moderate climbing, awesome mountain biking and some other not-so-interesting stuff.  Last Saturday I pressured Mike into climbing some moderate trad (inside sources said he was less than stoked) so we went to Big Lost Cove.  We did a gorgeous 5.8 arete that was probably 500ft or so.  Zach and Eric Hiegl had both recently climbed it with their significant others so it was only fitting that grimbo and I do it.   If nothing else, it proves we are not homophobic!  Big Lost Cove is pretty remote so just getting to the base of the climb was an adventure.  Mike was slamming tree branches in my face and the whole nine.  We cranked it off in 3 pitches and each pitch offered some really cool moves.  Although it’s not the 5.12 wall at Middle Hawksbill, it was fun nonetheless.  We finished the day off with some Bell’s Pale Ale while taking pictures of what we just climbed.

Next subject: A New Project!  (Can you guess where it is??)

This bloc appears to be unclimbed and ready for a first accent.  I will show you the picture below but it honestly doesn’t give it justice.  The what looks to be a spicy topout is about 20ft off the deck!  The face is almost dead vertical and looks like there are just enough holds to make it climbable.  I’m not great at judging new problems but this thing has caught my eye more than once.  It looks like it’s begging to be climbed and next time I’m in the area I will be sure to give it a few burns.  If it turns out to be cool and kicks my ass I promise to disclose the location to let you stronger folk send it.

New project in town?

Finger Resources

So if you’re like me you tend to get injured from time to time.  Maybe it’s because I weigh 190lbs or maybe it’s my form, who knows…I’ve been scouring the web for articles on an A1 pulley strain I’ve been battling lately.  I found a badass article by Dan MacLeod on pulley injuries.  In this article he described a specific finger injury called a flexor unit strain.  He says “These are tendon strains which often occur in the ring finger when using two or three finger, open handed holds. Unpleasant twinges of pain are felt along the length of the tendon through the finger and palm.”  This sounds like exactly what’s going on with my finger. I injured it in the climbing gym on a pocket hold.  I also realized that I’ve been doing ice therapy but the water has been too cold.  If you’re climbing hard at the moment, be smart.  Prevention is the best practice.

Truckers in Boone!

Oct 28 -- Legends -- Boone, NC

They are coming to Boone on October 28th (my bday!). Tickets are $15 for students and $20 for everybody else. The show is on a Thursday night so you really don’t have any excuses not to go.  I’m going to take Friday off work and bring some friend up.  Get your tix here before they sell out!!  (If the site says “cookies disabled” just refresh once).  This is a pretty big name to be stopping by Boone, NC so get excited.  I will see you there for sure.

High Country Bound

So long Columbia!  Well, at least for the next week.  I’m scootin’ up to Boone to enjoy a weekend in the mountains and then heading down to Atlanta to attend some SUSE linux training.  My plan is to climb some moderate routes (preferably trad) and just take it easy in general.  I bummed I missed the Reel Rock Tour in Banner Elk last night but fortunately there is a showing in ATL next week while I’m down there.  If my finger holds up this weekend I may try to visit Stone Summet (nation’s largest climbing gym) to see what all the hype is about.  My mountain bike is packed in the truck so I may crank some gears too.

Amazing Ale

Ginger Brew + Bourbon = The Drink

I had a ginger brew (ginger ale) this evening and I promise once you try it, you won’t ever drink a seagrams again.  You can pick one up at Earthfare and it’s the real deal.  It’s got a ginger root kick that creates a delicious aftertaste.  After you add a little bourbon to the mix you’ve got yourself a real treat!
